What is Leagonomics?
A new publication dedicated to looking in depth at the greatest game of all - Rugby League.
We are a team of numbers nerds with decades of Statistical, Economic and Financial Analysis. We aim to understand how the game works and what the trends suggest is a recipe for success. We unpack the key numbers behind the game, team's wins and losses, where they do well and where they need to improve.
The flagship is our 'Rundown' newsletter, going out to subscribers on a weekly basis breaking down our expected winners - based on the numbers, and explaining our key findings.
For those who love the game, want an inside edge or just want to get some insights, we aim to provide an entertaining but informative look at the season.
How do you do it?
We start with numbers. Lots of numbers. We collect them, sort them and arrange them so they display what we want to see. We then use the model we have built to show us the important bits, and cut through the rest.
We then use this information to run a series of weighted comparisons and steps we have developed to come up with our findings. Whether it's making a call on an upcoming match, or finding why a team is doing so well in one area, the numbers reveal the story.
Are you just asking ChatGPT who will win?
No. Even if we did, ChatGPT doesn't know who is going to win.
Nobody does - not even we know.
What we do have is a library of data, trend analysis and weighted models that nobody else has, and the ability to weigh this up against our own viewing of each match and how the teams are playing on field.
The numbers can't watch the game, and watching the game can't unpack the numbers - combining the two however lets us uncover some key insights.
Are you always right?
No, we aren't. We can't claim to be. But we will be transparent with our weekly picks and keep an honest record of our hits and misses on our record page. League is a cruel game at times, a missed tackle, a lucky bounce, a field goal or just plain hot potato football in the dying seconds can flip a game. The numbers can't see this, in fact we can't predict it either when it happens - upsets occur which make the game so exciting.
When we do make a major howler, we will come back and explain how we missed so badly - usually in the Off Season - and break down the numbers showing where we went wrong.
